Roughcast external finish for exposed and traditional properties.

Symptoms & warning signs

  • Traditional roughcast finish cracking, blowing or falling away in patches
  • Weather-driven damp on an exposed elevation, common in coastal and upland locations
  • Previous smooth-render patching on a roughcast wall that stands out and traps water
  • Loss of the original harled texture across an elevation
  • Water penetration through failed roughcast on a solid stone wall

Inspection & diagnosis

Every quote begins with an inspection. Where a roof is inaccessible, complex or storm-damaged, we can carry out a drone inspection to capture imagery and annotated findings before recommending works.

Typical scope of work

  • Assessment of the wall construction and existing finish, particularly on older solid-wall buildings
  • Removal of failed and hollow material back to a sound background
  • Base coats applied in a mix suited to the substrate — lime where the building requires breathability
  • Aggregate selected to match the existing texture and local character
  • Roughcast thrown and finished by hand across the full elevation for a consistent appearance
  • Detailing around openings, roofline junctions and the wall head

Timescale

Roughcasting is applied by hand and is weather-critical: expect several days per elevation, with the programme dictated by dry, frost-free conditions. Working elevation by elevation avoids visible joints in the finish.

Guarantee & aftercare

Roughcasting carries our written workmanship guarantee. We record the mix and aggregate used so a future repair can be matched, and we will advise honestly where a breathable lime finish is the right choice for an older building even though it is the slower option.

Project evidence

Every job is photographed before, during and after the work, so you can see what was found, what was done and what it looks like finished — including the parts of the roof you cannot see from the ground. Those photographs are shared with you and, with permission, may be used as a case study.

After chimney repair: the same stack repointed in matched mortar with new flaunching, sound pots and neatly dressed lead flashing.
