Non-intrusive roof surveys

Slate roof installation, re-slating and repair with material matching for regional and heritage properties.

Symptoms & warning signs

  • Slates slipping individually across the roof — usually nail fatigue rather than slate failure
  • Slates that flake, delaminate or sound dull when tapped
  • Previous repairs made with mortar, mastic or mismatched slate
  • Slate fragments in gutters, on paths or in flower beds
  • Torn or perished underfelt visible from inside the loft
  • Sagging courses or an uneven roof plane on an older property

Inspection & diagnosis

Every quote begins with an inspection. Where a roof is inaccessible, complex or storm-damaged, we can carry out a drone inspection to capture imagery and annotated findings before recommending works.

Traditional Welsh natural slate pitched roof on a British stone cottage with even courses and lead ridge detailing.

Typical scope of work

  • Assessment of whether the existing slate can be salvaged and re-laid or must be replaced
  • Sourcing of matched natural slate — including Cumbrian and reclaimed slate where appropriate
  • Strip, sort and set aside of sound slate for reuse where the condition allows
  • Repair of rafters, replacement of battens and installation of breathable membrane
  • Re-slating with correct head lap, gauge and nailing for the pitch and exposure
  • Diminishing courses set out sympathetically where the property calls for it
  • Lead valleys, soakers, flashings and ridge detail formed traditionally

Timescale

Slate work is slower than tile by nature. A full re-slate typically takes one to three weeks on site depending on area, pitch, salvage sorting and lead detailing. Sourcing matched or reclaimed slate can add lead time before the start date, and we will confirm availability before committing to a date.

Guarantee & aftercare

Slate roofing carries our written workmanship guarantee. Where new natural slate is supplied, the manufacturer or quarry warranty is passed to you. We record the slate type and source used so any future repair can be matched.

Project evidence

Every job is photographed before, during and after the work, so you can see what was found, what was done and what it looks like finished — including the parts of the roof you cannot see from the ground. Those photographs are shared with you and, with permission, may be used as a case study.
